Dr. Kevin V. Carlson, MD, FRCSC

Dr. Carlson is a native of British Columbia, and graduated from medical school at the University of British Columbia in 1994. He completed his urology residency training at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1999. The next year, he completed a fellowship in female urology, neurourology, and urodynamics at New York University Medical Center in New York City. He has been practising in Calgary since 2001, and has also worked in Ontario and at the University of British Columbia.

Dr. Carlson treats a broad range of adult general urology conditions, with particular interest in male and

emale incontinence, female pelvic floor reconstruction, voiding difficulties, and neurogenic voiding dysfunction. Other areas of interest include kidney stones, prostate problems, urologic cancer, and vasectomy reversal. He has also taken additional training in laparoscopy.

Dr. Carlson is involved in several clinical trials and is active in the North American urologic community. He has published numerous peer-review research articles and book chapters, and attends multiple national and international meetings annually. Dr. Carlson is a member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Continence Foundation, and the Nominating Committee and Continuing Professional Development Committee of the Canadian Urological Association.

Early in 2004, Dr. Carlson founded mdconversation, a web-based medical education company whose mission is to enhance patient education about medical conditions and procedures, and to facilitate continuing medical education for health care professionals. Dr. Carlson is the Executive Vice President of content development for mdconversation, Editor-in-Chief, and Senior Editor for the urology section.

Outside of clinical practice, Dr. Carlson’s chief interest is endurance athletics, and he strongly adheres to a policy of promoting health through example. He has competed in seven marathons, qualifying for the Boston Marathon in 2002, and recently competed in his second Ironman event. Other interests include photography, music, golf, snowboarding, and wakeboarding.
